So the other day I heard something that really resonated with me –“So if you find that you think you are the smartest guy in the room – you should go to a different room.”
I really love that and I realized after looking at that and contemplating it – I have a lot to learn and there a lot of smart people out there in this space that I can learn from.
I had the pleasure of working with an analyst firm run by a really smart guy and also a very talented writer – Jerome Wendt. He had an ability that took complicated technical topics and presented them in a digestible manner. Jerome would study different vendor’s solutions and compare them and go so far as to rank them – pretty bold right. He ended up selling millions of copies of the DCIG Buyer’s Guides – covering different solutions.
I loved that approach and found another Analyst firm that has a very large staff of talented analyst that cover a wide spectrum of IT topics. Ben Book runs this organization (GigaOm) and we recently partnered up with them to bring their content to folks that we deal with – you all.
While having in excess of 35 years of practical experience in this space I can honestly say that that I have never found myself to be the smartest person in the room because I have been fortunate to be in the right place at the right time and be surrounded with truly brilliant folks.
