Virtual Tape Library

Virtual Tape Libraries (VTL) first appeared in the mainframe space some 20 years ago with some limited success. The benefits that were being delivered was that multiple streams could be supported and the speed of the backup operations as they were compared to conventional tape proved to have a pretty good ROI. Typically the environments that embraced this solution were fairly large with minimal backup windows available due to the online transaction intensive applications needed to be available to users across multiple time zones eventually requiring applications to be available 24 x 7 to the end user community at the same time sharing the same disk and cpu resources. In addition the restoration of data was much more efficient if it could be performed with the backup data on disk. It turns out that the majority of requests for restoring data that is less than a week old. The size or capacity of the VTL in terms of storage capacity is directly associated with how much of the data you want to reside on disk prior to migrating it to a longer term media – tape.

The movement to the mid range servers and PC platforms over the past 15 year coupled with the explosion of data requirements in raw capacity the same requirements have fallen on the shoulders of today's system administrators. The benefits of the VTL solution have become just as attractive to this space if not more so than the mainframe environment. This is due primarily, we believe, to the number of servers supporting discrete applications and their storage requirements in most cases doubling or more on an annual basis.
