Tiered Storage

Strategic Storage Solutions has studied the market place and there are a number of vendors that claim they have a tiered storage offering. We define tiered storage as methodology that will insure that data types and their associated frequency of reference (how often is the data element requested by an application) are stored on the appropriate storage medium.

Large data elements that are not referenced frequently with a very low change rate should probably reside on higher density and slower revolving HDA's (i.e. 1 TB or larger 7K SATA drives) which tend to be less expensive. Smaller data elements referenced very frequently with high change rates should probably reside on higher performing HDA's that would have such characteristics as smaller densities and higher revolution speeds (i.e. 450GB 15K SAS or fiber drives)which tend to be more expensive. In some cases these types of data elements and access patterns would benefit from a higher tier that would be solid state disk which is the most expensive medium.
