Tape Libraries came on the scene over twenty years ago primarily due to the inefficiencies of physically handling tape. The operations folks just couldn't keep up with what was primarily a batch or sequential process that required fairly non-dense tape reels and a lot of them to perform the tasks associated with getting the jobs done. Though the dynamics of the operations and the nature of how applications are fed data has changed dramatically the handling of tape and having human intervention required just doesn't make good economic sense and the ROI on tape libraries and automating the process of handling data bound for or requested from tape is the only real way to handle these requirements.

Strategic Storage Solutions understands the tape world very well and unlike many circles we do not see tape going away any time soon primarily due to the very low cost of tape as compared to all of the associated costs of disk.
