This approach to data protection is relatively new to the mainstream market place. The technology and capability is based on leveraging wide area network capabilities coupled with the Internet connectivity. A large number of startup companies have come on the scene with a solution that in our opinion is really focused at environments that have a relatively small amount of data to mange. The current dynamics of a solution lend itself to a pricing model that is priced much like a utility. The deliverers of this service will typically charge on a consumptions basis that will be based on the amount of storage that is replicated and stored offsite. This model may make sense to smaller companies with no infrastructure in place or the personnel to perform the data protection functions.

 

The service provider will collect a base line of the files to be protected. That copy is then taken to the remote site and stored. Then the typical approach is to 'drop' a line into the customers location and have some application 'secret sauce' installed on a server that is capturing all of the data for backup or deploy an 'agent' on all of the servers to be protected. The 'secret sauce' then will talk to a backup application and corresponding replication software at the customer location collecting the changed elements of all of the targeted protected files. The replication software will then move the changed elements across the WAN or internet to the remote location available to be utilized for recovery.
