IPSAN

The genesis of the IPSAN is really a result of the proliferation of the Microsoft Operating System Windows into a multi user environment and the subsequent need to share data in a multi-user environment in an inexpensive manner. Fiber was just too expensive and the ability to leverage the already installed Ethernet protocol helped to accelerate the adoption of iscsi. Microsoft was also very attentive to the tremendous market demand and opened up the protocol and developed a driver at no cost and made it available to the public and consequently storage manufacturers. The ability to run scsi commands over the IP protocol also accelerated its adoption because of users and manufacturers knowledge of IP and scsi already existed.

Another concept somewhat evolved from the early providers of IPSAN solutions was clustered storage. Clustered storage allows for tremendous scalability and very high data availability. The performance is also impressive due to the number of simultaneous streams that can be delivered. This coupled with MPIO and virtual ports a very strong performing platform evolved.
