De-Duplicated Storage

Data De-Duplication (de-dupe) continues to evolve after its introduction a few years back and has created quite a bit of commotion in the storage space. A number of companies came out with solutions that frankly were introduced a bit early in regard to the 'ready for prime time'. Probably the biggest issue was the performance and the amount of time it took to complete the daily and weekly backups not to mention restoring applications from de-duplicated data

The primary motivation behind this concept is to reduce the occurrence of duplicated data in order to minimize the amount of physical storage required to support primarily backup data. It turns out that backup data has a very large percentage of duplicate data because the change rate of most of the applications are typically 15% or less in most environments.

 

The evolution and improvements that have occurred with the algorithms and where in the data path the de-duplication occurs has expanded the applications that may well be good candidates for this process. The most obvious is email due to the proliferation of attachments that are sent to cc recipients etc. Engineering drawing applications that are static or tables that are shared and the list of candidates continues to expand.
